Safety First at Aristocrat Technologies
Opportunity – A Severe Accident Prompted a Need for Improved Safety
Aristocrat Technologies Inc.is the leading designer, manufacturer, and distributor of casino games. The company’s mission is to bring joy to life through the power of play. Its values are rooted in creativity and technology, and the company has a history of innovation that has shaped the gaming industry over many decades. Aristocrat slot technicians use Wheels’ fleet of vans and trucks to service machines. During the height of the COVID pandemic, they were using a third-party telematics provider to monitor driver behaviors and established protocols to ensure drivers adhered to safety measures at client casino sites. However, after a severe accident, they realized telematics was not giving them a complete picture of safety. The company then dedicated itself to improving driver safety from the executive level to the fleet managers, driver managers and drivers.
Strategy – Improving Driver Safety and Engagement
Considering the accident, Aristocrat sought to enhance their safety measures by incorporating a dash camera solution targeting distracted driving. They initiated a trial of 20 dash camera devices in September 2022. The cameras were set up, both front-facing and driver-facing, without in-cab messages for an initial two weeks to gather baseline data. After activating in-cab messages for three weeks, they observed substantial improvements in driving behaviors. To incentivize even better driving behavior, Aristocrat linked the visually enhanced risk assessment score, which evaluates driving safety, to the quarterly bonus metrics for drivers, managers, and directors. This strategic change not only provided an incentive for improved driver performance but also encouraged managers and directors to ensure their teams drove safely.
Results+ – Vast Improvement in Driver Behavior
The results of the trial were promising. Distractions decreased by 76%, tailgating reduced by 25%, and high-severity distractions were completely eradicated. The most underperforming driver improved their VERA score by 76%, and 8 out of 10 drivers enhanced their scores. Encouraged by these outcomes, Aristocrat has been rolling out Nauto cameras and they now cover 90% of their fleet. Plans are now in motion to explore similar camera solutions for their fleet in Australia.
