As we edge towards mid to late fall, it is a good idea to brush up on ways to keep safe on the road in the changing weather and road conditions. Here are some tips for your drivers as they navigate the changes.
Watch for back-to-school traffic
Be aware of the increased number of cars, buses and pedestrians, especially in the morning and afternoon as children walk to and from school and their neighborhood bus stops.
Adjust your eyes to the time of day
The first 15-45 minutes after sunrise and before sunset can produce sun glare. Keep your windshield clean and have sunglasses ready to improve visibility. If driving after dark, give your eyes 2-5 minutes to adjust before heading out.
Don’t brake on leaves
Wet leaves can be as slippery as ice so drive slowly and avoid hard braking. Leaves may obscure lane lines and other road markers, so pay attention to the edge of the road and take care to stay in your lane.
Use caution when driving in rain
With increased rainfall, roads may be more slippery than usual. According to SafeMotorist.com, “Hydroplaning occurs when a tire encounters more water than it can scatter. Water pressure in the front of the wheel pushes water under the tire, and the tire is then separated from the road surface by a thin film of water and loses traction. The result is loss of steering, braking and power control.” Maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you. If foggy, use your low beams or fog lights, but never high beams.
Watch for wildlife
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says, “Animal-strike-related insurance claims are more than twice as frequent as the yearly average in November, when the search for a mate keeps the big bucks on the move, according to an analysis of claims from 2006 to 2018 conducted by the Highway Loss Data Institute.” Also, deer and other animals are most active during sunset and sunrise. Be extra watchful when driving near the woods and deer crossing signs.
For many, fall is such a beautiful and striking time of year. We want everyone to enjoy the colorful scenery while doing everything to keep safe.
