David Glines, Director of Product Management at Wheels, and I had the chance to walk the floor at CES 2026, and one thing was clear: the automotive industry is entering a new era. For years, CES has been all about electric vehicles (EVs). This year? AI stole the show.
AI and Autonomy Take Center Stage.
Autonomous driving and AI systems were everywhere. The big theme: cars are no longer just vehicles; they’re becoming intelligent assistants. Industry leaders are doubling down on “AI at the edge,” deep sensor integration, and software-driven mobility.
EVs are still part of the story, but they now share the stage with robotics, proactive in-vehicle experiences, and connected ecosystems.
Mobility Meets Robotics.
One interesting trend to learn more about (and see in person!) was the convergence of mobility and robotics. Hyundai showcased AI-powered robots like MobED, capable of autonomous navigation and even handling tasks like charging and parking. This is part of a broader move toward “physical AI,” where virtual models are deployed in real-world robotic systems, where vehicles and robots work seamlessly together.
Smarter In-Vehicle Experiences and Next-Gen Displays.
Inside, the experience is getting smarter and more visually appealing. LG showcased AI-driven environments with gesture and eye tracking, personalized displays, and context-aware visuals. Vehicles are evolving into proactive companions, detecting emotions, monitoring safety indicators, and adapting in real time. Voice and vision-based assistants are replacing static screens with dynamic, intuitive interactions.
I was amazed at the technology that could bring holographic windshields, augmented reality head-up displays (AR HUDs), and transparent OLED screens to life. These features refine how drivers interact with information. These innovations don’t just look cool, they’re about creating safer, more immersive, and personalized journeys.
Software-Defined Vehicles.
Another major theme was the rise of software-defined vehicles. Companies like Visteon and Qualcomm are leading the charge with platforms that integrate infotainment, safety, and connectivity, all designed for over-the-air updates. This shift ensures vehicles can evolve long after they leave the showroom.
Walking through CES 2026, it was clear that AI is the foundation and future of automotive innovation. From intelligent in-vehicle experiences to robotic mobility and software-defined architectures, the industry is moving toward a future where vehicles are smart, connected, and integrated into our lives.
