The growing demand for EVs and the increasing vehicle sales in this sector indicate a clear trend towards a future filled by electric cars powered by electric motors, leaving behind the era of emissions vehicles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss this very subject with Carlos Oropeza, a member of the marketing team here at Wheels, on a video podcast. Our conversation uncovered valuable insights that can guide fleets considering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/resource-hub\/blog\/6-reasons-to-make-the-transition-to-electric-vehicles\/\">transition to <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/resource\/6-reasons-to-make-the-transition-to-electric-vehicles\/\">electric vehicles<\/a>, and I\u2019d like to share some of the key takeaways with you to help navigate this important transition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/QcPU-tUcHTY<\/div>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of a Well-Planned Charging Strategy<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>One of the first and most critical considerations for any fleet manager looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/resource\/6-reasons-to-make-the-transition-to-electric-vehicles\/\">transition to EVs<\/a> is the charging strategy. This should be a top priority, as it directly impacts the success of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/resource\/oem-electrification-2\/\">your fleet electrification efforts<\/a>. The availability and accessibility of charging stations play a crucial role in ensuring seamless operations for your electric fleet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Primary and Secondary Strategies<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Every fleet will have a Primary and Secondary charging strategy.\u00a0 The Primary strategy will be where most of a given vehicle\u2019s charging takes place, which is dictated by where the vehicle is parked for a significant amount of time.\u00a0 The Secondary strategy should be the \u201cbackup\u201d, and will generally be public charging.\u00a0 No fleet should be utilizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/services\/fuel-ev-charging\/\">public charging<\/a> as a Primary charging strategy.\u00a0 Public charging is expensive, and overuse of DC Fast chargers can be detrimental to battery health.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Primary Charging Strategy:<\/strong> This is where most of the charging activities will take place; this could be at a corporate office, vehicle depot, or at drivers&#8217; homes in the case of take-home vehicles.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Secondary Charging Strategy:<\/strong> Almost every fleet will need a \u201cbackup\u201d strategy for public charging. This allows the drivers to charge when they stray out of range from the main operating base. For your drivers, it will also alleviate any anxiety over \u201crange\u201d.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selecting the Right Vehicles<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Another important consideration is if the currently available models of electric vehicles in the market will meet the replacement requirements of your internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This will largely depend on the type of operations of your fleet, so you should consider:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Vehicle Capabilities:<\/strong> Ensure that the EVs available today are sufficient for the demands of your fleet, especially in range and load capacity.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Driver Needs:<\/strong> Consider the driving habits of your employees. For example, if a driver does primarily long-distance travel, then an electric vehicle might not be suitable until the public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/resource\/range-charging-infrastructure-faqs\/\">charging infrastructure<\/a> has matured.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leveraging Telematics for Optimal EV Management<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Telematics data plays an important role in managing electric vehicles effectively. Unlike traditional vehicles, EVs function more like networked devices, similar to smartphones, constantly transmitting invaluable data for fleet management:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Real-Time Data:<\/strong> EVs come with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/services\/vehicle-telematics\/\">telematics that can deliver accurate real-time data<\/a> about the power usage, state of charge, and range. This information is valuable for monitoring and optimizing fleet performance.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Sustainability Tracking:<\/strong> Telematics also makes it possible to track the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions and the CO2 output, which is important in ensuring that a company meets its sustainability goal.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overcoming Challenges in the EV Transition<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Transitioning to EVs is not without its challenges. One of the biggest is the recharging infrastructure investment, especially when putting up charger installations at business locations, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheels.com\/public\/resource\/at-home-ev-charging-costs-reimbursement-strategies\/\">home installations<\/a> for that matter, in large numbers. Their support will be crucial in breaking barriers and making the\u00a0 EV transition smoother. Having gained senior leadership support can help in your change management journey.
