Mid-paragraph, your ears focus back to the Zoom call as you hear, \u201cDo you agree,\u00a0Laura?\u201d\u00a0Agree to what?\u00a0You wonder\u00a0with building anxiety.\u00a0Now you click back over the\u00a0Zoom\u00a0browser\u00a0to see if you recognize the slide\u00a0and try to hit replay on\u00a0the\u00a0subconscious tape recorder in your mind to see if you can recall what may have been asked of you. Nothing\u00a0clicks.\u00a0Now you\u2019re forced to say, \u201cCould you repeat that?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
You got caught up in distracted service. Much like its\u00a0well-known\u00a0cousin, distracted driving,\u00a0you had a service accident because you believed you could be successful tending to two things at once. You can\u2019t drive and talk on the phone, and you can\u2019t participate in one client meeting while emailing\u00a0about\u00a0another client\u00a0request. You won\u2019t give either client\u00a0the\u00a0attention they deserve and expect.\u00a0And you will miss out on important\u00a0conversations and the ability to connect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Working from home has given us the ability to\u00a0work in a safe environment\u00a0and\u00a0flexibility in our\u00a0personal\u00a0and work responsibilities. Thank goodness that many of us have had this option during the past\u00a0year and\u00a0have been able to stay productive and engaged. But it does come with\u00a0a\u00a0different\u00a0set of\u00a0distractions that we may or may not control.\u00a0For example, we may not be able to control our dog barking at the Amazon delivery truck, but we can control\u00a0our actions and\u00a0attention.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
If\u00a0the above meeting was in a conference room with everyone live and presenting, you would never dream of looking at your phone if an email\u00a0or text\u00a0came in\u00a0and\u00a0started\u00a0to flash that addictive red light. Some companies have cell phone protocols\u00a0for meetings rooms, to leave your phone at the door or turned over,\u00a0to help us break this addiction and\u00a0stay focused. But in our own\u00a0kitchen tables and home offices, we don\u2019t have that social pressure to keep you honest. So, what do you do? It\u2019s okay to admit it, we all have done it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Stay in one meeting at a time. Give each of your clients, colleagues and\/or vendors your full attention. You are not being unresponsive to the waiting email. But you are providing better service by answering when you are not distracted. Just like when you are driving, put the phone down and concentrate on the road ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
