Not all apply to corporate fleets, yet the technology is in such an evolutionary state, it\u2019s important to gain a wide breadth of foundational knowledge to prepare for where it may lead in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">future.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">V2X Technology: Many Moving Parts<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">V2X is the umbrella term for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">wirelessly connecting vehicles with various entities including other vehicles, infrastructure, networks and more<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">A brief description of each is below:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/technology-innovation\/vehicle-vehicle-communication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Vehicle (V2V)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology facilitates the sharing of speed, location, direction and other data points between vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Infrastructure (V2I)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology sends traffic data such as safety, mobility and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">environmental<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0advisories to vehicles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Pedestrian (V2P)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology alerts a variety of road users including pedestrians, children in strollers, people on mobility devices and bicyclists of approaching vehicles and of the traffic conditions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/telecom\/wireless\/the-car-in-the-age-of-connectivity-enabling-car-to-cloud-connectivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Cloud (V2C)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology allows two-way, internet-to-vehicle communication, facilitating a variety of new business models such as usage-based insurance and predictive maintenance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/vehicle-to-grid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology enables idle vehicle batteries to send power back to the grid when needed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Device (V2D)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology connects vehicles to electronic devices such as mobile phones and other telematics systems.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/iot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/C-2VX-Enabling-Intelligent-Transport_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Network (V2N)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology facilitates a connection between the vehicle and a cellular network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vehicle-To-Home (V2H)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology allows a vehicle to power a home as a back-up energy source.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Note: V2I advances may depend on your region.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2>Connected Vehicle Safety<\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">he U.S. Department of Transportation is well underway with its <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Connected Vehicle Safety<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Pilot. Since 2015, the agency awarded\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">grants to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">three cities in Wyoming, New York and Tampa to put certain technologies to the test. The final output may be region-specific since states have a large amount of control over public roadways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Transport Canada\u2019s Program to Advance Connectivity and Automation in the Transportation System awarded grants to several institutions, such as the City of Ottawa to install smart traffic signals. Additionally, the Government of Canada just wrapped up its <\/span><a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/the-government-of-canada-announces-winners-of-the-smart-cities-challenge-859468435.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Smart Cities Challenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">, awarding a total of $75 million to various cities and towns to implement their unique visions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">No V2X Standards &#8211; Yet<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There\u2019s a debate over which wireless communication standard will eventually reign supreme. For years, dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) dominated the industry. It\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>similar to\u00a0Wi-Fi, provides a high-speed connection and performs well during extreme weather conditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2016, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sought to mandate DSRC equipment in new vehicles, yet\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to date, it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hasn\u2019t instituted the regulation.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Others are going all-in on the C-V2X standard, a cellular system enabling a 5G connection. Successful\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C-V2X<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0testing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.automotivetestingtechnologyinternational.com\/news\/rd\/autotalks-and-datang-complete-chinese-c-v2x-direct-communication-interoperability-testing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">completed in Beijing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in July, making the possibility of China adopting the standard more feasible. While previously the European Union was not favoring C-V2X, yet it recently struck down a proposed mandate of Wi-Fi technology leaving room for the cellular-based system to take hold.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vehicles can\u2019t communicate if they\u2019re not equipped with the same technology. So, these disputes need a resolution.
